A desert-painted 2½-ton Stewart & Stevenson truck transported supplies and troops to the Army's 101st Airborne Division. The military called it the LMTV M1078.

The truck is now painted bright red and the Atascosa-Bexar County Volunteer Fire Department calls it Heavy Brush 202 Alpha.

The Department of Defense donated the truck to the Texas A&M Forest Service, which distributes surplus military equipment to volunteer fire departments in rural areas of the state.

The Bexar County Volunteer Fire Department had such a unit in the 1960s or 1970s. "This truck has a manual transmission and looks a lot like the car from the movie and TV series 'M*A*S*H,'" said the department's chief medical examiner, William Lay.

"I'm very happy that we were able to back up the device we had," Lay said.

The Ata-Bexar department is using a new fire truck. The department, with 22 volunteer firefighters, covers more than 12 square miles in south Bexar and north Atascosa and responds to other calls in both counties as needed. The area is in the middle of the winter fire season and low humidity has increased fire danger, Lay said.

The suspension and tire pressure on the new truck can be adjusted for riding on sandy soil, and it's better than the truck for off-roading and negotiating thick mesquite. It carries a 500-gallon water tank that firefighters can fill from a tanker or hydrant before maneuvering the truck into hard-to-reach areas.

Since being put into service four months ago, the truck has responded to several calls, including a fire in South Bexar County that burned several acres that were difficult for other departments to reach.

On New Year's Eve, the Ata Bexar Department burned brush to create a "fire safety zone" along the U.S. 281, where fireworks companies set up shop south of San Antonio. (Fireworks are prohibited within city limits.) Firefighters used the new truck to fight their own fires, Capt. Robert Rodriguez said.

The Texas A&M Forest Service presented the truck to the Ata-Bexar Department a year ago. The department received an $18,000 state grant for the reservoir. It took Darley, an Illinois-based fire protection company, about eight months to create this skid tank. It was installed by volunteer firefighters.

The Military Preference Program requires fire departments to paint their trucks in a non-military color. The work was carried out by volunteer firefighters with experience in auto body work. Local businesses donated paint and primer. Other volunteer firefighters with electronics backgrounds set up lights and sirens.

Some of the firefighters are military veterans who drove similar trucks in Iraq or Afghanistan, Lay said. They trained other units to drive and maintain the new truck.

An excess of military vehicles is a common sight at fire departments in rural Texas, Lay said. But to outsiders they are strange. Lay asked the Michigan man, "You mean those fire trucks?" he remembered.
